Director of Remote Applications in Challenging Environments (RACE), UK Atomic Energy Authority

Dr Rob Buckingham FREng is a Director of the UKAEA at Culham and Head of RACE (Remote Applications in Challenging Environments). Rob was co-chair of the Robotics and Autonomous Systems Special Interest Group that developed the UK RAS strategy published in July 2014.

He has spent his entire career in robotics, firstly as a sponsored undergraduate with the UKAEA at Culham, then as an academic in the University of Bristol, before co-founding OC Robotics in 1997. His return to Culham in 2014 to head up RACE closes a circle.

As Managing Director of OC Robotics, Rob led the commercialisation of nose-following snake-arm robots for confined and hazardous spaces. OC Robotics was a recipient of the Queen's Award for Innovation. The current LaserSnake program is a world leading programme with NNL and Sellafield, which has funding from Innovate UK, NDA and DECC. LaserSnake will provide tools for nuclear decommissioning.

Rob received The Royal Academy of Engineering's Silver Medal in 2012 and became a Fellow in 2013. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Engineering and Technology and a Visiting Professor at the Bristol Robotics Lab.
