Director of Compliance, CNIL

Having graduated from the Paris Institute of Political Studies (Sciences Po) and graduated in  Law from Panthéon-Assas (Paris II), Sophie Nerbonne started as a legal officer in SODEXHO (from 1988-1989) shortly before arriving at the CNIL as a legal officer of different sectors such as justice, national education and financial services (banking and insurance). In 1992, she became the Head of the Economy Unit and would later become Head of the department in 2001. In 2007, Ms. Nerbonne became the Co-Director of Legal Affairs, Technical Experts and International Affairs at the CNIL. She followed very closely European and International issues and events during the CNIL’s role as Chair of the Article 29 Working Party from 2008-2009. Appointed as a professional expert by the European Commission for questions on positive credit history files, she is often called upon to speak in economic professional circles on all domains having an impact on the protection of personal data.

Since September 2014, she is the Director of the Compliance Department, reflecting the reorientation of the CNIL’s structure in March 2014 in order to be a regulator more involved in accompanying professionals in their private or public activities. This consists of promoting a large line of regulatory tools that aim at simplifying administrative formalities and at accompanying the different stakeholders towards a higher standard of legal certainty as well as a more accountability in the respect of citizens’ data protection rights.
